Individual circumstances will differ. However, the following is a list of things which may have to be done after the death of a person.

  • The following documents should be returned to the local Social Security Office.
    • Order books
    • Payable books
    • Giro cheques
    • Child Benefit book (which includes payment for a child who has died)

  • Return the deceased's: 
    • passport to the United Kingdom Passport Agency. (A covering note should accompany the passport to indicate whether the passport is to be cancelled and returned or whether it is to be cancelled and disposed of by Passport Agency staff.
    • driving licence to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) with a covering letter.
    • log book of a car, for change of ownership to be recorded.
    • season ticket (and claim any refund due*). 
    • membership cards of clubs and associations (and claim on unexpired memberships*).
    • library books and tickets.

*NB:    Any sums recovered must be included in the inventory.

  • Notify the following of the death, as applicable.
    • The Social Work Department if the deceased had previously received: 
      • meals on wheels
      • home help
      • an appliance or aid issued by the department
    • Any hospital the person had been attending.  
    • The GP to cancel any home nursing.
    • The employer and trade union.
    • The child's teacher if a parent, brother or sister has died.
    • The bank.
