Survivors commonly report that disturbing images, sounds, tastes, or smells, and unwanted memories "pop" into their minds.
They feel themselves reliving the traumatic event at least in part, and they experience all the emotions which they did during that event.
For spells these unpleasant memories and images lie dormant but may resurface when the individual is: stressed for some other reason. physically unwell or "run down". faced with unavoidable reminders of the trauma.
These reminders may come in the fashion of:
NB: At about a year after the initial trauma, survivors may experience the "anniversary reaction"; a time when many of the unpleasant memories and feelings return. |
