When should parents and carers seek professional help? - Generally speaking, the higher the profile of the incident (particularly in terms of media and public interest), the greater is the likelihood that professional help may be required at some stage.
- The violent deaths of parents or siblings are events which carry are particularly high risk of psychological problems.
- If children are still markedly distressed and doing disturbed behaviour after 1 month, then it might be worth while seeking professional advice. Alternatively, if the child has not shown any reactions to a major trauma after 1 month, then advice should be sought.
- Professional help may be required where the symptoms include:
- extremely low mood with preoccupations with death.
- self-harm.
